Happy New Year!

Welcome back!! I hope everyone had a wonderful and relaxing holiday! Our January curriculum is as follows:

Literacy

  • Writing our goals for 2017
  • Recount our winter vacations
  • Making inferences in our reading
  • Reading and writing poems that require us to make inferences
  • Continue Reading Workshop (Guided reading /literacy centres)

Math

Number Sense & Numeration
  • Subtraction with regrouping (2-digits)
  • Rounding numbers to estimate answers to subtraction questions
  • Problem solving using addition and subtraction
Measurement

  • Estimate, measure and record length, height, and distance using centimeters, meters, kilometers
  • Choose the most appropriate unit of measurement for a given task
  • Compare and order the length of objects in centimeters and/or meters in problem solving contexts
  • Estimate, measure, and record area (using cm grid paper) and perimeter
  • Read a thermometer and record temperatures to the nearest degree Celsius
  • Identify benchmark temperatures for freezing cold, cool, warm, hot, and boiling as they relate to water and air
  • Read and record time using analogue & digital clocks, and solve time related problems
  • We will cover mass and capacity at a later date

Social Studies

  • Continue our inquiry of how land is used to meet human needs (Key terms include: urban, rural, agriculture, residential, commercial, industry, recreation, conservation)
  • Students will use their knowledge from the unit to "create a community" based on some given information. This project will include a fact sheet about their community, a billboard to advertise important services / features of their community, and a map of their community.

Science

  • Mr. Lintern has taken over for Mrs. Stormes who has begun her maternity leave. He is teaching a unit on Forces.

The Arts

  • Visual Arts - continue using the elements of design (line, space, shape, colour, texture) and a variety of media to create works of art
  • Music - Mrs. Edwards is teaching a drumming unit
